More than 1,000 mariachi musicians gathered in Mexico City’s iconic main plaza on Sunday, strumming guitars and performing classic songs like “Cielito Lindo” to mark the end of a mariachi congress honoring this celebrated musical tradition.
This gathering reportedly surpassed the previous record of 700 mariachis set in Guadalajara, though the Guinness World Records organization has yet to confirm if a new record was officially set. Musicians from across Mexico joined the event, expressing pride in showcasing a musical form deeply rooted in family tradition.
Jesús Morales, a violinist who started learning from his father at age 8, reflected on the significance of the moment, saying, “The heritage that my dad mainly instilled in us is having respect for music and respect for our roots.”
The ensemble of mariachis played guitars, trumpets, violins, and more, with pioneering female musicians like Aida Juárez, a mariachi veteran with 20 years of experience, noting, “We feel proud that we broke (the record) … because we are Mexicans.”
Attendees, including Diana Rocío Campos, marveled at the atmosphere. “Anyone who listens to [mariachi music] gets very excited, whether they are Mexican or not,” she shared, mentioning that fans had traveled from as far as Colombia and Japan for the event.
