Threads introduces location tagging feature with potential for targeted advertising.

Threads has begun rolling out a new location tagging feature, allowing users to add locations to their posts, similar to Instagram’s location tagging. By enabling location access, users can choose nearby places or manually search for one, with some humorously tagging their posts with locations like “hell.”

The introduction of location tagging could be a significant step toward future advertising on the platform. Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg has previously indicated that the company plans to grow Threads before introducing ads, and collecting location data would be crucial for targeted advertising.

While Meta hasn’t provided detailed comments on the feature, an in-app message reveals that location data will be used to offer “personalised content” based on nearby places. This update could also improve Threads’ search capabilities, potentially enhancing its ability to track breaking news and timely updates.

The location tagging feature is currently being rolled out to some users, though it is not yet available to all or on the web version of the app.
