In response to the World Health Organization’s declaration of mpox as a global public health emergency, several countries have pledged to donate vaccines to African nations. This effort aims to address the inequity that left African countries without access during the 2022 outbreak. Here are the countries and their contributions:
- Canada: Up to 200,000 doses, dependent on the recipient countries’ storage and administration capacity.
- France: 100,000 doses based on local needs, as updated on September 6.
- Germany: 100,000 doses from military stocks for short-term outbreak control.
- Japan: Democratic Republic of Congo has requested at least 2 million doses from Japan.
- Spain: 500,000 doses (20% of its stockpile) and urging EU member states to donate 20% of their vaccine stocks.
- United States: 50,000 doses to Congo and 10,000 doses to Nigeria, alongside financial support for distribution.
- European Union: 215,000 doses pledged to Africa, with 175,420 procured by HERA and 40,000 donated by Bavarian Nordic.
These donations aim to support Africa in managing and mitigating the mpox outbreak.
