Prince Harry and Meghan wrapped up their visit to Colombia on Sunday with a forum addressing the challenges faced by women of African descent in politics. The Duke and Duchess of Sussex also engaged with young people at a traditional music festival in Cali, located on the Pacific coast.
Invited by Vice President Francia Márquez, Colombia’s first Black vice president, the couple’s tour began on Thursday. Their visit highlighted cultural and social issues, aligning with their Archewell Foundation’s mission.
At the forum titled “Afro Women and Power,” the couple was immersed in Afro-Colombian music and poetry. Meghan, who spoke in Spanish, expressed her gratitude for the warm welcome, revealing her proficiency in the language.
Panelist Ana Granja discussed the difficulties Black women face in political participation due to racism and discrimination, emphasizing their strength and resilience. Vice President Márquez urged the couple to help secure financial support and strengthen social programs for women and youth affected by gender violence.
The visit aimed to highlight efforts to restore dignity to ethnic communities and promote development for women, children, and adolescents.
Earlier in their trip, Harry and Meghan visited towns known for preserving African heritage, including San Basilio de Palanque in Cartagena. They also participated in a digital security forum in Bogotá, advocating for mental health and combatting cyberbullying. Additionally, they visited a school and met with military members and veterans impacted by Colombia’s internal conflicts.
