Turkey will formally declare its intervention in South Africa’s genocide case against Israel at the International Court of Justice (ICJ) in The Hague on Wednesday, according to a diplomatic source. The declaration is set for 1330 GMT.
Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan had previously announced Turkey’s intention to submit this declaration. The move is seen as a push for the international community to recognize and address the humanitarian crisis in Gaza.
In May, Turkey decided to join the case initiated by South Africa in response to Israel’s actions in Gaza. Turkey’s involvement follows legal preparations and will be submitted as a formal declaration.
In June, Spain also sought to intervene in the ICJ case. Israel, meanwhile, has rejected the genocide accusations, asserting that its actions in Gaza are a matter of self-defense against Hamas militants following attacks on October 7.
