On a thrilling night at the Paris Olympic pool, Torri Huske edged out U.S. teammate and world record holder Gretchen Walsh to claim the gold medal in the women’s 100 metres butterfly. Huske finished in 55.59 seconds, narrowly beating Walsh, who clocked 55.63 seconds and took silver despite leading at the halfway mark.
China’s Zhang Yufei secured the bronze medal.
This victory was especially sweet for Huske, who narrowly missed a medal in the same event at the Tokyo Olympics three years ago, finishing just 0.01 seconds behind the winner. In Paris, Huske made a remarkable comeback from third place to first in the final stretch.
Reflecting on her performance, Huske said, “My first 50 felt really good, and then I’ve been working on my second 50 a lot. Last year, I had a weak finish and lost ground in the last 50, so I focused on improving that aspect.
