Meta-owned messaging service, WhatsApp, is testing a new feature that allows file sharing without an internet connection. Similar to iPhone’s AirDrop, this feature, named ‘Nearby Share’, was first introduced in WhatsApp’s Android beta version in April 2024 and is now being tested on the iOS beta version.
‘Nearby Share’ is particularly beneficial for users in remote areas or those with poor internet coverage. It enables users to share files with loved ones or colleagues without worrying about internet connectivity.
The feature will function differently on iPhones and Android devices, adapting to the unique capabilities of each platform.
