Hungary secured a dramatic 100th-minute winner to defeat Scotland 1-0, bolstering their chances for a last-16 spot at Euro 2024 while dealing another major tournament disappointment to the Scots.
Kevin Csoboth’s decisive breakaway goal, scored with almost the final kick of the match, propelled Hungary to third place in Group A with three points. In contrast, Scotland ended in last place with just one point, failing yet again to reach the knockout phase of a major tournament.
Hungary’s progression now depends on the outcomes of other groups over the next three days to see if they qualify as one of the best four third-placed finishers. For now, Marco Rossi’s side can celebrate their thrilling victory, which revived their tournament hopes when it seemed they were heading home.
“It was unbelievable. We never achieved anything in the past without big, big suffering. Today was no different. I think that we played the match that we needed to play,” Rossi stated. “We created many options, many situations. We also left some chances to them. But overall, I think if I say that it was a deserved win, I’d be right,” he added.
The match was a scrappy affair, with both teams struggling to gain control despite their desperate need for a win to stay in Germany. Scotland, under Steve Clarke, dominated possession in the opening 25 minutes but failed to create clear-cut chances and ended the first half without a single shot on target, despite having 61% of the ball.
