Following her dominant performance at Roland Garros, Iga Swiatek further solidified her status as the leading force in women’s tennis by retaining the top spot in the latest WTA rankings released on Monday.
The 23-year-old Polish sensation clinched her fourth French Open title with a commanding victory over Jasmine Paolini in the final, extending her lead at the summit of women’s tennis. Swiatek now sits comfortably ahead of her closest competitor, Coco Gauff, by a margin of 3,707 points. Gauff, whom Swiatek defeated in the semi-finals at Roland Garros, ascended to the second position in the rankings.
Swiatek’s reign at the top has been remarkable, with the Pole occupying the pinnacle of women’s tennis for a total of 107 weeks since April 2022, except for a brief interlude when Aryna Sabalenka briefly took over in autumn 2023. Sabalenka, the Kazakh powerhouse, slipped to third place in the latest rankings.
Paolini’s remarkable run to her maiden Grand Slam final propelled her to a career-high seventh position, while 17-year-old Mirra Andreeva, who reached the semi-finals, surged 15 places to 23rd in the rankings.
Meanwhile, Brazilian Beatriz Haddad Maia, who reached the semi-finals last year but suffered an early exit this time, dropped six places to 20th.
The latest WTA rankings underscore Swiatek’s dominance and the emergence of new talents in the women’s game, setting the stage for an exciting future in tennis.
