The U.N. human rights office has raised alarms regarding potential war crimes committed by both Israeli forces and Palestinian armed groups. This comes in the aftermath of a deadly raid by Israeli forces, which resulted in the liberation of four hostages but also claimed the lives of hundreds of Palestinians.
Jeremy Laurence, spokesman for the U.N. office, voiced apprehensions over potential breaches of rules of proportionality, distinction, and precaution by Israeli forces during Saturday’s raid in the urban Nuseirat refugee camp. Palestinian health authorities reported at least 274 Palestinian casualties, including numerous women and children, during the operation.
Laurence highlighted the heightened risks faced by civilians and hostages due to the actions of Palestinian armed groups operating in densely populated areas. He asserted that such actions by both parties could constitute war crimes, emphasizing the catastrophic impact on civilians caught in the midst of the conflict.
Referring to the ordeal endured by the hostages and their families, Laurence stressed the imperative of their prompt release, condemning their initial capture as a violation of international humanitarian law.
The conflict between Israel and Hamas escalated following an attack by the latter on October 7, resulting in significant casualties and abductions. According to Gaza’s Health Ministry, over 36,730 individuals, including civilians, have lost their lives in Israel’s war against Hamas. The dire situation has exacerbated humanitarian crises, with over a million individuals in Gaza facing the threat of severe starvation by mid-July due to restricted access to essential supplies.
