According to Bloomberg News’ report on Monday, Apple is engaged in discussions to integrate Google’s Gemini artificial intelligence (AI) engine into the iPhone, as per sources familiar with the matter.
Furthermore, the report states that Apple has recently explored collaboration with OpenAI, backed by Microsoft, and considered leveraging its AI model for potential integration into its devices.
Active negotiations between Apple and Google are underway, aiming to license Gemini for powering new features expected to debut in the iPhone’s software later this year. While Apple is developing its own AI models for upcoming iPhone iOS 18 capabilities, it seeks a partner to enhance generative AI features. These features could include functionalities such as image creation and essay writing based on simple prompts.
Despite ongoing discussions, terms, branding, and implementation details of the potential AI agreement remain undecided. An announcement regarding any deal is unlikely until June, coinciding with Apple’s annual Worldwide Developers Conference.
Both Apple and Google currently collaborate under an existing agreement, with Google serving as the default search engine on Apple’s Safari web browser. Responses from Apple, Google, and OpenAI regarding this matter were not available at the time of Bloomberg’s report.
While Apple has been slower than competitors like Microsoft and Google in integrating generative AI into its products, CEO Tim Cook recently affirmed the company’s significant investment in this area.
