Elon Musk announced on Monday that his artificial intelligence company, xAI, will be releasing “Grok,” a chatbot poised to rival OpenAI’s ChatGPT, as an open-source project later this week.
This development follows Musk’s recent declaration, approximately two months ago, expressing discomfort about expanding Tesla’s influence in AI and robotics without securing at least 25% voting control of the company.
Earlier this month, Musk initiated legal action against OpenAI and its CEO, Sam Altman, alleging a departure from the startup’s original mission of developing AI for the betterment of humanity, rather than solely for financial gain.
During a podcast conversation with computer scientist and podcaster Lex Fridman in November, Musk voiced his appreciation for the concept of open-source AI.
Musk’s startup introduced the AI model to a limited user base in that same month.
In December, xAI launched Grok, its competitor to ChatGPT, exclusively for Premium+ subscribers of the social media platform X, with Musk aiming to cultivate what he has described as a “maximum truth-seeking AI.”
