The stock market is down, jobs are being eliminated, and companies are taking huge losses. All these negative factors, believe it or not, can be advantageous to an executive who has turned around negative trends into winning situations during this devastating period. When I write resumes today, I try to brand my client by focusing on what he or she did to fix a company or a division in a down market. This is critical in gaining recognition of one’s entrepreneurial mentality and visionary capabilities in turning things around. All stories have a beginning and an end. Therefore, you want to demonstrate successful outcomes (endings); however you cannot accomplish this unless you talk about the beginning. For example:

Was the company in trouble (declining sales, profitability, and market share) – due to a down economy? What did you do to fix it and what did this include? Most importantly, tell the reader the result of your effort.

Perhaps you reorganized a division. Do not write: Reorganized a division, which resulted in multi-million dollar sales gains in a one-year period. Use your innovation in telling the reader the mess you fixed, and how you adjusted your efforts to meet the challenges of today’s terrible economic times. For example: Reorganized a division with declining sales, profitability, and market share in a down economy, to become a leader in its industry in a one-year period and explain to the reader what you did to overcome various obstacles. Now the impact of what you did has more credibility and will generate interest, especially in this market.

The format that I use for an executive resume is quite simple. First I craft a mission statement, which gives the reader a summary of contributions one has made when it comes to fixing an organization in a down economy. Once I have completed this, I bring in three dynamic accomplishments to give this mission statement credibility. I then bring in up-to-date key words and phrases to solidify my client’s experience in a given profession. When I develop the professional experience section, I highlight challenges and then bring in accomplishments.

You do not want to look like everyone else; you want to rival your competition. So, make sure you create a winning resume that will generate reader excitement and lead to quality interviews
